Limited Blogging for a Day or Two

I will not be updating the blog for a couple of days. My wife underwent successful back/neck surgery this morning and I will be doing what I can to help her out around the house for the next few days. I do plan on being in attendance at Game Day Saturday morning and will be taking plenty of pictures to share on the blog and at Raider Power.

  • The Lubbock A-J reports that guard Alan Voskuil will follow Andre Emmitt, Ronald Ross, Jay Jackson, and Martin Zeno as the team's leader this season. Texas Tech head coach Pat Knight says Voskuil may lead by example rather than being vocal this season:

(From the Lubbock Avalanche Journal)

"It's just like Jay Jackson and how he did it," Knight said. "It's more from a follow my lead by what I do and not what I say. It's just not in Alan's personality, but (the team) definitely has to follow him. He's one of our best players and the best shooter on the team, so I think he'll lead more by example.

"I will be on him more to be more vocal just because he is the kid who has been featured in magazines, he is going to be the focal point for us from an offensive standpoint. I don't hold him up to task to be that vocal. I won't hold that against him. What I'll hold against him is his play on the court."

Nebraska – Texas Tech Wrap Up

Nebraska had a game and and they stuck to it as the Huskers gave seventh-ranked Texas Tech all they could handle Saturday in Lubbock. The Red Raiders needed overtime to stay unbeaten on the season with a 37-31 win over the Cornhuskers at Jones AT&T Stadium.

Post game stories from around the country:

The Lubbock A-J's Don Williams writes that the narrow win over Nebraska exposed weaknesses for the seventh-rated Red Raiders, and it's not just a couple.

(From the Lubbock Avalanche – Journal)

Let us count the ways the Raiders showed they can be beat: There's the kicking game. There's the pass defense. There's Mike Leach's risk-taking. There's being able to average 48 points yet lay a three-and-out with games on the line. And there's the weird ability to have really productive running backs, yet not be able to make a yard when 1 and exactly 1 is needed.

Meanwhile, big plays on offense helped bail out the Red Raiders time and time again.

The demolition has begun on Thompson and Gaston Halls to make room for the new Business Administration Building. Most of the work right now is on the Gaston side of the structure as walls are starting to be torn down.

The new Overton Hotel and Conference Center now stands at 15 stories tall. This will be final heighth of the new structure. Brick work has begun on the lower part of the building.

The Centre II, directly east of The Centre in North Overton has really taken shape. Most of the construction right now is on the area that will front the parking garage that is located in the center of the site.

There are plenty of signs of homecoming across campus as the weekend get near. The most notable are the homecoming boards placed along Broadway at the main entrance of campus. The theme for homecoming this year is "Tech at Night." A take off of Nickelodeon television's "Nick at Night," featuring old tv shows.

There are also a couple of pictures of the Administration Building Bell Tower that resemble the one I took a couple of years ago made MSNBC.com's "Prettiest Campus" feature.

Hope you enjoy the shots, and feel free to post any comments or questions.

Texas Tech-Kansas State Wrap Up

A number of game stories from yesterday's 58-28 Tech win over Kansas State.

Texas Tech wide out Lyle Leong should safely be out of head coach Mike Leach's dog house after the sophomore made three catches against KSU on Saturday. All three receptions were Red Raider touchdowns and it was Leong's first action on the field since the Nevada game.

Mike Leach on his receiver being in the doghouse:

(From the Lubbock Avalanche Journal)

"What he did to get in (the doghouse) is highly classified. It's deeply guarded in the bowels of Texas Tech, and it's guarded by the dogs that you saw on Harry Potter. OK?" Leach said after Texas Tech beat Kansas State 58-28 Saturday at Snyder Family Stadium. "As far as what he did to get out, just made plays. He just focused on being a great team guy and made plays."

View from the Cheap Seats

The best news of the week is that the bye week is history and the Red Raiders open up Big 12 Conference play as one of the top-ten teams in the nation while the 7th-ranked Red Raiders are also promoting Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree as Heisman hopefuls. How about some TTU-KSU memories, a Big 10 team suspension, and a Texas Tech-Kansas State prediction.

Pass Happy – Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell should easily become the Red Raiders all-time leader in passing yards Saturday against Kansas State. The Tech senior signal caller only needs 175 yards through the air to surpass Kliff Kingsbury in total passing yardage.

Catch Happy – Meanwhile, receiver Michael Crabtree only needs two touchdown receptions to tie the school mark for career touchdown catches. Jarrett Hicks had 30 td receptions in four seasons, while Crabtree has almost equaled the mark in just under a season and a half. Remember, Pass or Catch, it's your decision.

A Losing Trend – The Wildcats have not had much success in Big 12 openers recently as Kansas State has dropped 6 of their last 7. However, Saturday's game against Tech will be the Wildcats first conference opener at home since 1998, a 48-7 win over Texas.

KSU-TTU Flashback – The last time the Red Raiders and Wildcats hooked up was in 2005 in Lubbock as Tech rolled over the Cats 59-20. The most memorable moment of that contest was Texas Tech defensive back Dwayne Slay leveling KSU quarterback Allen Everidge as the young quarterback was nailed on a quarterback draw. The number 12 worn by Everidge that day is still imprinted in the Jones AT&T Stadium turf.

Six Pack – There are six teams in the Big 12 that are ranked in this week's top-25 polls as conference kicks off this weekend. The way the schedule and the rankings work out, it's interesting that none of the ranked-teams face each other in week one of conference play. Colorado could have been the conference's seventh-ranked team but failed to beat Florida State on the road last week.

Band BannedThe University of Wisconsin will be without the support of its marching band when the 18th-ranked Badgers entertain number-14 Ohio State. The entire 300 member band was suspended after allegations of hazing, alcohol abuse, and sexual misconduct by some members. It's not the first time the Badger Band has been in hot water as the group was put on probation after a 2006 incident.

Bye-Bye – Finally, the bye week is history and it's time for the Red Raiders to hit the field again after a two week layoff. Since the team had a less than stellar performance in non-conference play, the Red Raiders will go to the Land of OZ and get the job done. Prediction: Texas Tech42 Kansas State 23. Sorry Mr. Banks, your Cats won't hit that 40 mark this time around.
