Random Sunday Morning Texas Tech News

  • The Lubbock Avalanche Journal has a story this morning on how the Red Raider receivers stepped up their game after Michael Crabtree was forced to leave in the second quarter of the Baylor game with Texas Tech trailing against the Bears. Tech quarterback Graham Harrell on the team missing one of its star players.

(From the Lubbock Avalanche Journal)

"It always hurts not to have Crab out there, but everyone else stepped up," said Tech quarterback Graham Harrell, who shook off two early turnovers to throw for 309 yards and two touchdowns. "The guys that came in for him did a good job, and we came out with a win."

  • The Lubbock A-J also reports that the Red Raiders are on the outside, looking in, when the BCS comes into play because of the three-way tie in the Big 12 South. However, Tech head coach Mike Leach, as usual, has his own opinion about how the tie should be broken.

(From the Lubbock Avalanche Journal)

"The Big 12 Conference should have an executive session tonight," Leach began, "and just say, Are we about the student-athlete? Are we trying to edify America and make this a better place? Are we actually doing the proper thing and balancing the dual role of both being an athlete and being a student?' When they do that, I think they will find that no one's more deserving than the Red Raiders to win the Big 12 South."

  • Sunday's Red Raider Notebook from the Lubbock A-J.
  • The Red Raider men's basketball team bounced back after Friday night's loss to a ranked-Pittsburgh team and knocked off Mississippi State 77-73 in the third place game of the Legend's Classic in New Jersey. John Roberson led the Red Raiders with 13 points as Tech improved to 6-1 on the year.
  • The Lady Raiders dropped a 71-61 decision to the University of South Florida on Saturday on last day of the Paradise Jam Tournament in the Virgin Islands. The Lady Raiders, who dropped all three games in the tournament, were led by Keisha Walker's 15 points.

Baylor – Texas Tech Wrap Up

Texas Texas scored 21 straight points to erase a 28-14 halftime lead by Baylor as the Red Raiders improved to 11-1 on the year with a 35-28 win over the Bears at Jones AT&T Stadium Saturday afternoon. The Texas Tech football team will wrap up the regular season Saturday afternoon against Baylor at Jones AT&T Stadium. It will be the last time that the seniors on the 2008 Red Raider team will play in front of the home crowd on Senior Day. New TTU Campus Pictures - 11/18/2008 Edition

The latest edition of TTU Campus Pictures has been posted over at Raider Power. This group includes shots of the new leisure pool construction, the Fuller Track and Field renovation, the Livermore Auditorium renovation, the Thompson/Gaston Hall demolition, plus various shots of campus that includes a group of black and white photos.

The leisure pool is starting to take shape. The path of the lazy river can clearly been seen at this stage of the construction.

Since the women's soccer team is now playing at it's own complex west of the Health Science Center, the Fuller track and field complex is under going a complete renovation. The area for most of the field events have been moved to the infield area while the entire track is being redone as well.

The demolition of Thompson/Gaston Hall continues as one wing of the Gaston side of the building has been torn down and the other wing gutted.

The Livermore Auditorium renovation is nearing completion. Sidewalks are being poured around the new entrance to the building.

There will be a lot more construction on campus in the very near future as work will begin on November 29th of the east side of Jones AT&T Stadium.

Please feel free to leave any comments or questions.

  • Brandon George of the Dallas Morning News reports that wide receiver Michael Crabtree is thankful for the bye and that it will provide a chance for his injured ankle to heal.
  • The Minneapolis Star-Tribune says that the Red Raiders comeback win over the Texas Longhorns this season had its roots in Texas Tech's 31 point comeback in the Insight Bowl over Minnesota two years ago.
  • Betsy Blaney of the Dallas Morning News writes in an article that Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach is not interested in talking about other jobs.

Random Monday Evening Texas Tech News

  • The Baltimore Business Journal reports that Under Armour has signed an $11 million dollar deal with Texas Tech to outfit all of the 17 Red Raider varsity teams.
  • Gene Menez of Sports Illustrated keeps Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell at the top of his Heisman Watch list. See story to see who is chasing Harrell this week.

(From Sports Illustrated)

1. Graham Harrell, Texas Tech, QB, Sr.

Last week: 40-of-50 passing, 456 yards, 6 TDs; 5 rushes, minus-2 yards in a 56-20 victory over No. 8 Oklahoma State.

Season: 332-of-463 passing, 4,077 yards, 36 TDs, 5 INTs; 28 rushes, minus-5 yards, 6 TDs.

Heisman-o-meter: Harrell and the Red Raiders didn't have any letdowns this weekend, though the Heisman frontrunner got off to a rough start when he fumbled a snap on Tech's opening possession, setting up an Oklahoma State touchdown. Harrell recovered and threw six touchdowns, though his first touchdown pass on a fade pattern to Edward Britton may have been the prettiest of them all (or perhaps it was his fifth, another fade, to Michael Crabtree). The whole night, Harrell took the short stuff against the Cowboys' defense (his longest pass was 28 yards), which allowed Tech to score touchdowns on seven-consecutive possessions. Now he gets two weeks to prepare for an epic showdown in Norman, where a good performance and a win would just about nail down the top spot on this list.

Up next: Nov. 22 at Oklahoma.

  • The Daily Toreador, the university newspaper, has its version of Saturday night's win over Oklahoma State.

Texas Tech remained unbeaten on the year as the second-ranked Red Raiders rolled over 9th-ranked Oklahoma State Saturday night 56-20 at Jones AT&T Stadium. Lubbock Avalanche Journal

There are a great group of pictures from Saturday's game from CBS Sportsline and the Associated Press. I put them all in a thread over at Raider Power.

Wide receiver Eric Morris had a big night for the Red Raiders, catching a career-high ten passes in the win over OSU. The Lubbock A-J has a story on the Elf's big night for Tech. Morris on his team's success and well as his own success:

(From the Lubbock Avalanche Journal)

Morris attributes his success - and that of the team - to a conversation he had after last year's Gator Bowl. Morris and Harrell discussed the possibilities of having a special season this year and the rest of the team has followed suit. "We put in a lot of work, a lot of work that people don't see when the cameras aren't around, when no people are around," Morris said. "The team has done a great job responding and we're playing really well right now."

The Lubbock A-J also has stories on the Tech safeties playing a big part in the win and a story on how the team continues to meet its own expectations.

Random Friday Evening Texas Tech News

  • The media outlets that cover the Washington Huskies continue to write about Texas Tech head coach Mike Leach and the chances of luring him away from Lubbock for the great northwest, with the latest article coming from John Berkowitz of the Washington Huskies Examiner. It's amusing that these guys can predict the future and know for a fact that Leach will be somewhere else next season. If these guys are that good, shouldn't they be telling us what the stock market and the economy is going to be doing in the next year?

(From the Washington Huskies Examiner)
Leach won't be at Tech next year. He is going to use this season as a springboard to get out of Lubbock. He is rumored to be a top candidate for the Tennessee job if Phil Fulmer is fired. Leach would prefer to live West of the Rockies and he still covets the Washington job according to insiders. He feels Washington is one of the two programs in the West that can annually compete for a national championship.

  • Meanwhile, Sports Illustrated's Austin Murphy has a positive story on the Red Raider football team and says Texas Tech is the feel good story of the 2008 college football season. Murphy's defining moment of the season? Last Saturday night in Lubbock, Texas of course:
(From Sports Illustrated)
Every year we see a handful of indelible, season-defining moments. The latest came in Lubbock last Saturday night, when Texas Tech's Graham Harrell and Michael Crabtree slid a shiv between the ribs of the Texas Longhorns.
  • The Dallas Morning News has a great story on the creator of the Raider Red costume, Jim Gaspard.

  • The Lubbock Avalanche Journal reports that Lubbock is working hard to capitalize on the Red Raiders big win over Texas and the recognition it has brought to the city.

Mike Leach Wants Blackout for OSU Game

Pass the word. Mike Leach wants fans to blackout the stadium again this Saturday night as the Red Raiders host Oklahoma State at Jones AT&T Stadium. Leach made the comments tonight on his coach's show that aired on News Talk 950 in Lubbock.

Random Thursday Texas Tech News

  • Gregg Doyel of CBS Sports says Texas Tech should be ticked off at other schools for thinking they can hire head football coach Mike Leach away from Lubbock. Doyel, like many people in west Texas already know, says that Leach has it pretty good in the Hub City:

(From CBS Sportline.com)

But that's the thinking in Washington. A recent column in the Seattle Times noted: "Word on the street is Leach is ready to get out of Texas Tech and would be highly interested in the UW. The bigger issue is whether Washington would be interested in him."

Look, there's nothing wrong with the Seattle Times. That's a paragraph that has been, or will be, written in various places over the next few months. Just substitute Clemson or Tennessee or (name a school) for Washington, and you've got the general idea. But I've got three problems with it.

One, somebody tell me why Leach should be "ready to get out of Texas Tech." The Red Raiders are No. 2 in the country, and if pollsters had a backbone, they'd have voted Texas Tech No. 1 over Alabama. Tell me why a coach would be dying to leave such a program, especially when you consider this little factoid: When he arrived in Lubbock in 2000, Leach inherited a team coming off four consecutive five-loss seasons. From those modest twigs, he started recruiting and built a palace. So imagine what sort of structure he can erect now that he's recruiting to a place that just beat No. 1 Texas.

  • Jimmy Burch of the Forth Worth Star-Telegram writes that the Oklahoma State football team is feeling like a champion as the Cowboys head into Saturday night's game in Lubbuck.
  • The Sporting News reports that the low expectations of this year's Texas Tech men's basketball team doesn't faze head coach Pat Knight. The Red Raiders are picked by conference coaches to finish 10th in the Big 12 this season. Knight on the coaches picking his team at the bottom of the conference:

(From the Sporting News)

"I don't blame them," he said. "They don't know about our players, they don't know about the coach. I'm hoping these guys step up and we prove a lot of people wrong."

Goin’ Band Half-Time Pirate Show via the Tuba Cam

Here's a different view of last weekend's half-time show by the Goin' Band. One of the tuba players recorded the show from the show itself. Pretty neat perspective and notice when they scramble to their spots after the first song, the guy shooting the video collides with another tuba player.

New TTU Campus Pictures – 11/6/2008 Edition

I have posted a new group of pictures from the Texas Tech campus and surrounding area at Raider Power. This group includes shots of the Gaston/Thompson Hall demolition, the Marsha Sharp Freeway, the North Overton area, the hanging of the holiday lighting for Carol of Lights, and Raiderville.

Raiderville is currently running the entire length of the east side of Jones AT&T Stadium as students and their tents line up in anticipation of this weekend's Oklahoma State – Texas Tech game.

Crews are continuing to hang the holiday lighting around the main area of campus in anticipation of the Carol of Lights on December 5th. A Lubbock Power and Light cherry picker was used today to string the lights on the administration building bell towers.

Goin' Band from Raiderland - Pirate Show

The Goin' Band from Raiderland added to the Texas Tech-Texas weekend with a great half-time performance. The pirate themed show was dedicated to Red Raider head coach Mike Leach and Leach himself was featured on the jumbotron at Jones AT&T stadium as the band took the field.

The band will have an encore performance of the show this weekend at the Oklahoma State game and there may be additional footage of "Captain" Leach on the scoreboard.

Getting Ready for Oklahoma State

Last weekend Texas Tech played in the biggest game of the school's history as the Red Raiders knocked off number-one Texas 39-33 and in the process leap-frogged to the number two spot in the BCS poll. Now that last week's game is history, the Red Raiders will once again be playing in the biggest game in school history as the Red Raiders entertain number-nine Oklahoma State. Kickoff is at seven Saturday evening at Jones AT&T Stadium and will be televised once again on ABC television.

Head coach Mike Leach put it best this week when he said "last week's win over Texas won't mean a thing if the team doesn't beat OSU this week."

Texas – Texas Tech Wrap Up

It was simply an amazing ending to an amazing college football game as Texas Tech toppled top-ranked Texas 39-33 Saturday night at Jones AT&T Stadium. Quarterback Graham Harrell hooked up with Michael Crabtree on a 28-yard touchdown pass with one-second left to give the Red Raiders their 500th victory in the school's history and perhaps the biggest win of the program.

WFAA-TV reports that Harrell is a hero in his hometown of Ennis, Texas.

A local resident has his thoughts on the Red Raider quarterback:

(From WFAA-TV)

Don Williams of the Lubbock A-J has his Red Raider Notebook open on this Sunday Morning.

The Lubbock A-J also has a story on how well the Tech defense played against the Horns.

Tech head coach Mike Leach on how well his defense played against Texas:

(From the Lubbock Avalanche Journal)

"I think our D-line did a really good job," Tech head coach Mike Leach said. "(Texas) hit some big plays, obviously, but (McCoy's) a really good player. They have good backs and good receivers. "I felt we took a half away from (McCoy). We didn't take the whole game, but we did take a half. I thought that helped."
